What will they think of next? Apparently, it's shadow knitting. I am immediately reminded of the ghost design fabrics that I saw being produced in the south of India or by Indian craftspersons in Guatemala, but have been informed that this shadow knitting is more three dimensional and has to do with a changing look in a fibers rather than the fabric.

Truly it is a creative innovation, but still an elderly friend who is a lifetime knitter was not so impressed. She offered the following declaration. "We are living in a time when so much information is available and more is coming every day. There are a range of studies that have linked this to a syndrome, calling it 'information overload.' Common symptoms are disorientation, an inability to function normally and extreme frustration."

What's In A Shadow?

Now, we have shadow knitting - a knitting technique that tries to bring out the illusory nature of things. Einstein explained that darkness, or shadow, do not really exist. They are conditional to the absence of light and as soon as light enters, darkness is vanquished. Likewise, shadow knitting points to the area that catches light from a different angle. As the eye moves over a garment made with this technique, the image seen seems to shift and change. The illusion is due to the appearance of the stitch and the way light plays across the shine or luster of certain fibers.

Knitting Color And Relief

The effect of shadow knitting is accentuated by using standard knit and purl, but applied with a side stitching technique. More color variation means a broader spectrum of change - contrasting a dark design against a white background or vice versa. Any time the aspect of relief is visible in art, one can guess that a lot of concentration and attention went into the application. Just as shadow complements light, cameos in relief shine from the background material they are carved from.

Style, Texture And Design

As we explore shadow knitting more thoroughly, it is observed that elements of style, texture and design are present. The success of shadow knitting is immediately visible, but the lasting measure will be whether it becomes a standard among other knitting techniques. Time will tell.

Many more examples are available and can be found at your local craft store, at a good book store or online. Kits with shadow knitting projects are also available.
