Nothing changes the look of a room like fabric. The most dramatic changes can be made with curtains and draperies. They control the light in the room. They are the fabric that extends vertically from floor to ceiling or some part of that. They can draw attention to a beautiful window or hide the flaws of an unattractive one. They can be used to draw the eye up to the architectural details above or across to artwork. They can be an inexpensive way to set a style. For the very elegant, formal look of swag and drapes, you might prefer to have an expert make the window treatments. For the simple sheers or straight drapes, however, you can buy whatever is available at your home center or make them yourself.

Selection And Savings

Anyone with the simplest of sewing skills can handle the task of sewing curtains. By making them yourself, you can widen your selection of fabric from whatever is available in the pre-made curtains to anything that's available at the fabric store. The savings you reap can be used to acquire better fabric. The sewing part is easy. Just determine the length and width, calculate the fabric needs for the amount of draping you want and stitch a few straight hems. The real secret to sewing curtains is choosing the right fabric.

Draping And Patterns

Your fabric store - either at the shopping center or online - will stock many types of fabric for home décor. Fabrics designed to be used for sewing curtains have desirable advantages. The width is important. You will probably prefer curtains panels that are one piece, without a center seam. Most curtain fabric is 54 inches wide. The extra wide curtain fabrics, 110 or 118 inches are meant to be used sideways, that is, with the selvage at the top and bottom rather than at the sides. This is called "railroaded." Fabric for unlined sheers is usually extra wide. If the extra wide fabric has a pattern, check to see whether it's meant to be railroaded.

If you're not sure if a fabric can be used for sewing curtains, hold up a corner and see how it drapes. If it is stiff and doesn't drape, it wasn't intended for sewing curtains. It's also a good idea to hold a fabric up to a window or some bright light to check for weaving problems that will be exposed by light.

Don't be afraid to ask for help when choosing a fabric. The right choice and a little work will make sewing curtains yourself pay off dividends for a long time to come.
